With Killarney due to stage its first “cars only” main circuit meeting of the year on Saturday, excitement levels among four wheel racing enthusiasts is reaching new peaks.

And after having to remain on the sidelines during two recent meetings, it’s the big one-make NA Carrera V8 Masters drivers – and their supporters -- who are feeling the most tension. Because although reigning champion Marcel Angel and Fabio Tafani are fighting it out at the head of the pack, with the challenger looming ever larger in Angel’s wing mirrors, there are other battles being waged in close proximity.

One of the best of them is likely to include the fast improving Craig Jarvis who has recovered from the glassfibre lap dance he was subjected to by Maverick’s Sarel van der Merwe and is now set to resume hostilities with a hard working Charles Arton.

After a change of mobile hardware, Arton is then due to appear again in the Mutlu Batteries / Execuline Classic Car events. But whether his BMW 530 can provide enough grunt to cope with the Ford Escort RS2000 of former double winner Neil Hawkins, or even Trevor Momberg in his long serving V6 Ford Capri, remains to be seen.

The densely populated Midas Clubman category has been divided into two morning events for classes A, B and C, as well as the less prominent, classes D, E and F. These will then be followed by a single “grande finale” after lunch for all the battle scarred survivors.

Although Audi A4 driver Nieyaaz Modack has to be regarded as the overall favourite he is not immune and has been beaten a couple of times this season. So it would not come as a real surprise if Beemer schemers Achmat Achmat, Gavin Cerff and Danie van Niekerk, or possibly Golfers Gareth Easom and Brennan Green, or even John Craig (Nissan Sentra 200STi), snuck in ahead of him.

Veteran Richard Schreuder has certainly made his presence felt in the Makita Supercar category since his return to action this season after a long layoff. However he has not really dominated and the clash between him and younger, more established drivers like Dayne Angel, Andrew Moffitt, Nick Adcock, Steve McCarthy and current champion Brad Wadeley, could go either way.

Gary Kieswetter’s super reliable class B, Porsche GT3 is the combo to beat in the Big Foot Express / Execuline Sports and GT class. Behind him, a package of eight drivers led by class A exponents Steve Humble (Opel Mallock 14) and Dawie Joubert (Porsche 996 Cup), are involved in a tussle for second place.

While the Charl Electrical Engineering Fine Car class is run on a scratch basis, it also includes an Index of Performace award that gives everyone a fair shake. As a result it has once again attracted an interesting variety of entries, ranging from a 1966 Austin Mini to an early Audi Quattro and a selection of Porsches.

Gates open at 07.00, with the first of the 15 races due off at 10.00. Admission is R40 for adults and R10 for scholars under 16. There is no charge for kiddies under 12.
