STREET2STRIP - Posted: 16/02/2010

The idea of the Street 2 Strip events is to provide the facility at a nominal fee to streetracers who are racing in and around Cape Town. As there will be no formal competition and this is aimed purely at the Streetracers, no competition license will be required however indemnities will have to be completed. The timing lights will be in place however there will be no results posted nor prizes awarded at the end of the evening.

This event is aimed specifically at the streetcar streetracers with RSA drivers licence's. So with that in mind there will be no motorcycles on the evening, no interruptions from the Club drag competitors, just a queue of streetcars wanting to take one another on down the strip. As we are planning to have many more of these types of events we are aware of noise pollution laws, we will not allow any vehicle even moderately too loud after 9pm. This includes some drifting practice at the oval side of the circuit when approved to run. So if you have an after market exhaust, don’t worry unless it is very noisy. Straight through exhaust will have a problem so please do be aware of the situation.

(Please note that rain could cause the Street2Strip event to be cancelled before the event or at any time during the event. No refunds, right of admission reserved. Times could also change as the organizers see fit to do so.)

LETTER TO DRAGS

To all Streetracers / Drag competitors

At a recent MSA commission meeting I attended in Johannesburg it was decided that 200 meter drag racing would be introduced to help keep speeds down across the finish line. This would apply to all Streetracing strips and include Killarney race track as it is not an A grade facility. This decision is being reviewed and we have made an application to be allowed to run 400 meter drags for our events. We need to wait and see what the criteria for this will be and will gladly conform to requirements stipulated where possible and if we can meet the criteria.

The reality is that Killarney is not a drag strip, however it has a main straight that can accommodate sprint racing, the circuit is 12 meters wide at the start line and becomes 10,2 meters just before it gets wider at turn 1. The sprint straight totals 800 meters in length from start area to catch nets. Killarney has been graded as a B grade Drag strip by Motorsport SA showing that we do comply with the sports governing body’s requirements.

In over 30 years of racing at Killarney we sadly had our first fatal accident at a drag event last year, the enquiry concluded that a technical fault caused the vehicle to flip out of control which had nothing to do with the braking area or famous hump closer to the start area. The incident was a result of mechanical failure.

We have looked at various options including turning the circuit to run the other way, moving the start line further back or decreasing the length of the competition from 400 meters to 200 meters. As Killarney is a multipurpose facility catering for most disciplines of motorsport one cannot expect it to be the best International Grade Main circuit or Drag strip, I have been to Tarlton and Kyalami where each only cater for its discipline of motorsport. Tarlton is the only A Grade Drag strip in the country despite many attempts and talk about building another here in the Cape or elsewhere.

Durban has no facility for drag racing at all despite many streetcar competitors wanting to be involved in the sport. In Port Elizabeth their main straight has also catered for drag events however no track bite can be put down due to the main circuit and their straight is short. The suggestion of increasing the breaking distance beyond our boundary walls is not possible due to a public road and factory located in that area, the catch nets are already right at the boundary of the facility with the last catch net less than 5 meters from this fence.

We will be having a Drag section meeting at Killarney WPMC Clubhouse next Tuesday 10th March where we will elect a committee for the Drag section, positions will include a chairman, vice chairman, technical representative, club drag representative, streetcar representative. We will also hopefully have some feedback about our application to MSA by then. Please note that only full WPMC members with membership books will be able to be elected or vote for the committee, you have to bring your proof of membership.

Once this committee is formed we will be able to establish the future of drag racing at Killarney and hopefully this will result in a better relationship between all involved. If you are interested in drag racing at Killarney join the club and make sure you are at the meeting next week so you have a say by making your vote.

STREET RACING HISTORY

The club had great pleasure in introducing this series in 2003 to accommodate licensed street legal vehicles, kind of like the good old days of group N racing where the full interior must remain in the car. They must also ride on street legal tyres leaving everyone on an even playing field.

This is a great chance for street racers to bring it to the track and prove their stuff in a safe controlled environment and having their times official to see where they sit in their classes. The six classes have been structured to accommodate everything from a 1300cc Mini right up to a 7 litre V8.

Turbocharging increases the vehicle's capacity by 50%, while supercharging and nitrous oxide rate a 40% upgrade.

The Challenge consists of a 400m sprint race and a gymkhana which has added excitement. Much like a rally super-special stage, two vehicles are sent off together on different courses designed to be theoretically equal in terms of elapsed time. Laid out on the original infield stockie pit area and the oval, if the cars are evenly matched and the drivers make no mistakes, they should cross the finish line together. The day ends with sideways driving and a burnout competition, which is always enjoyed by spectators and competitors alike.

With this being our second year, we are continuing to fine-tune the series and believe we have a winning formula to attract the street cars to Killarney.

We have also established a fund from a percentage of the gate money, for the purpose of aiding previously disadvantaged competitors to get started in motorsport.
